Adventures in Zoa

Season 1 - Episode 3 - New Adventures in Zoa
Questions and Answers

After a few seconds from the end of last episode, Geolain opens the door and allows Amalis entry into his tower.  Dak and Mordraine wait outside.  Geolain discusses his initial fear and the exact nature of Amalis’ appearance.  Geolain tells Amalis that he could be an angel, once revered by the elves.  Amalis knows nothing of this and Geolain doesn’t know enough.  He advises that Veoden, in Haanex, would know more.  Geolain advises that he not travel through the woods in that area alone.

Meanwhile, an acquaintance of Dak’s waves him over into a small pub just off of Geolain’s tower.  Both Dak and Mordraine sit, but the friend asks to speak with Dak alone, giving him a piece of paper that Dak takes deeply to heart.  He also notices a sense of dread, as if eyes were watching him the whole time, but everywhere he looked, some faces turned away just at the proper moment.

Mordraine is contacted magically by Istvan, the wizard he contracted with.  Istvan claims he is coming to Zoa and needs Mordraine to perform a mission of goodwill.  He says he’ll explain more when he arrives.

Delfrin’s superiors finish lecturing him on his behavior and his associates’ actions.  He is assigned a chaperone, Jillian, who is a hard, insufferable, burly woman who is all no-nonsense.  She is charged with helping Delfrin change Mordraine’s point of view.  Mordraine, however, kept his head and spent his time frustrating the paladins. Fakima, who waited for Delfrin, also felt the same sense of foreboding that Dak felt.

The trio went toward Geolain’s tower and caught up with Mordraine and Dak.  Istvan, a wizened old Halfling Wizard, made his appearance to Mordraine.  He filled Mordraine in on the details of his mission of goodwill, asking him to go to Haanex and attend a ball in his stead, seek out the host, Lord Bayumeth, and ask him to send off a delivery that he agreed to send to Istvan.  He gives Mordraine 2 invites and suggests he find an escort. Istvan tells Mordraine that the package must be brought back to Zoa as soon as it can be handed over. He says he’ll be finding residence in town and will meet Mordraine upon his return. Mordraine fills the group in on the task at hand and transportation and proper party attire are obtained.  The group travels to Haanex, where they ask around and find the sumptuous resort, the Silver Swan, where the party is to be held.  They are given rooms and Amalis goes to find Veoden, who fills him in more about his actual background.  Amalis is told that he might be an angel in early stage evolution and that the race hasn’t been seen for centuries.  Veoden has limited info, but shows that they were once revered by the elves and before they fully disappeared, they left a message of “Search the skies for your salvation”.

Mordraine and Fakima take comfort in the steam pool, while Delfrin tries to join in, fully clothed, but gets overheated and leaves.  Dak finishes his third attempt at forging an invite for himself to the ball.  Delfrin sits in on the staff setup of the event.

Amalis stops by a temple of the Bear and wails over his received info, feeling despondent about who he is and what he may represent.  An acolyte of the temple asks if he needs help and tries to talk him through his anxiety.  Amalis finds little solace in the discussion, but realizes that there are things he must discover for himself.

Once the ball begins, Dak, Mordraine and Fakima make their entrance and mingle a bit.  Mordraine discovers the Lord Bayumeth and chats him up over his mission.  The Lord is a bit reluctant at first, but is brought around to concede to delivering the goods agreed upon.  He tells Mordraine that it’ll be at the town stables with a carriage at midnight.

Mordraine takes a breather out on the balcony and runs into Ventria, Bayumeth’s goth daughter, who chats a bit with Mordraine and quickly agrees to go off with Mordraine for some physical fun.  Delfrin decides that in his capacity to watch Mordraine and keep him from doing evil acts, he follows and watches the events.  Delfrin overhears Ventria call out that she is being choked, so Delfrin acts and hauls Mordraine off the girl.  Once they start to trow down, Mordraine hears the 12 bells ring, signaling midnight.

The group hastily gathers together and heads off back to Zoa, but an hour and a half into the trip, goblins on worgs and orcs attack the carriage and topple it, sending the horses toppled onto each other.  The group fights off the attack.  In the midst of the fight, Dak is downed and beheaded and Fakima is taken down but is quickly revived repeatedly until the day is won.  Once the fight is over, the group discovers that the package has broken open, revealing an unconscious Dryad in coldsleep.

Realizing that time is now of the essence for this Dryad, the group races back to Zoa, via Jillian’s mount hauling the carriage.  Awaiting them on the steps of the Temple of the True is Istvan, who tries to deflect his reasoning for the Dryad’s delivery, but admits that he was saving her from a war-torn area and then enlists Amalis’ help to replant her.  Istvan agrees to pay for Dak’s resurrection.

Dak is revived and all is well for the group.  For now….

Something's Cooking

The group is brought before the council and Feyal speaks over everyone, showing his dominance of Zoa's highest seat of power.  Surprisingly, he clears the group of charges over the suspected robbery at the milner's and asks the group of what they saw at the Circle of the Gods when the priest was killed.

Feyal asks the group to perform a task to earn the council's good favor.  He wants them to travel north into the woods to find a famous baker, Gendrew, who once worked in Zoa, and ask him to cater a celebration soon to take place.  As Feyal last new, he'd taken residence with a wizardess named Andolyn.

The group agrees and travels to the suspected location of the baker's house.  Along the way, the group is set upon by bandits, who attempt to take the group down.  The group fights back and triumph over the ambush.

Once they reach the house, things are quiet.  Amalis and Dak refuse to enter, but Fakima, Mordraine and Delfrin did.  THe place seemed alright, until Mordraine picked up a book that didn't want to be picked up.  It fought back, snapping it's covers at whoever touched it!

The group saw that the kitchen was a bit messy.  They had a small encounter with a fire elemental who escaped the oven and was convinced to go back inside. Then they discovered there were tracks leading down to the basement, which was blocked closed by a chair propped against the door handle.  The group made their way downstairs to discover strange creature down there.  A rampaging Calzone Golem!  Made of tomato sauce, bread and cheese, the monster quickly attacked the group, causing more mess.  The group managed to defeat the creature, then once emerging from the basement, discovered an imp in the bedroom, tearing books apart while a man lay chained to the bed, badly bruised and beaten.

The group managed to fend off the imp, causing Dak and Amalis to enter the house and discover what was going on.  The man on the bed was freed, just as a woman appeared, confused as to why so many were in her house and why it was messed up.

Once the group explained what happened, she gathered that an old rival had set the imp on her house in hopes of causing her grief.  She warned the group of Feyal and his extensive influence.  Then she showed them some of the works she and Gendrew had created.  One particular concotion was healing beer, which could restore a person to full health from any damage.  She gave a skin to the group for their help and Gendrew agreed to come to Zoa and cater the event.  The group returned home and Dak led Amalis to the wizard, Geolain's tower, as Amalis is seeking another wizard named Veoden and Dak knew that Geolain had some contact with Veoden.

Once at the tower, Amalis presented himself to Geolain's page, but once Geolain answered the door, he slammed it quickly shut in panic.

From the Beginning...

The story begins….

The cast:

Amalis – Elven Male Druid, gold-skinned elf of prophecy

Mordraine – Human Male Warlock

Fakima – Half-Elf Female Ranger

Delfrin Rondstern – Human Male Paladin of the True

Zandak Urthadar- Human Male Rogue

Amalis arrived in Zoa, on a search for the wizard, Veoden. He shared the boat trip with Mordraine, a warlock, who had arguments with the captain over the trip.  Once they take leave of the ship, Amalis notices that mean looking muscle are following Mordraine and feels compelled to lend a hand to the newcomer.

Meanwhile, Delfrin, muted Paladin of the True and his hired woods guide, Fakima, a redheaded half-elf, are sent on a scouting mission in the northern woods of Reanarria.

Dak, a local man about town, sees this caravan of sneakiness and decides to follow along.  Mordraine catches wind of the train behind him and confronts the thugs. He takes a seat on some unsteady barrels and gives his position away. They hide, leaving Amalis visible and openly threatening with a crossbow.  The thugs barreled down the alley, plowing through Amalis and past Dak.

Before chase can be given, Mordraine bumped into Fakima and as they collected themselves, the city guard set upon them, claiming folks matching the descriptions of this group were seen robbing the milner's.  They were taken in and brought before Inspector Brubek, who attempted to interrogate the group and was a bumbling mess.

Talk of the group's activities broke down, leading Mordraine to shatter  Brubek's chair and Delfrin to lunge at Mordraine because he registers as Evil!  Dak picked up Delfrin and threw him into the oncoming guards, but was quickly stopped by other guards coming from another part of the building.

Brubek ordered the guards to put the group in a cell and take away their equipment.  Dak and Mordraine individually attempted to get the lock open, but the magic mouth spell on the gate alerted the guards repeatedly.

After night fell and the group began to settle in for rough sleep, they were awakened to Brubek and another man entering the cell.  They were all hit with spells that paralyzed them briefly.  They all watched as they were shackled and  loaded into a cart, then taken onto a work gang, forced to dig in a strip mine.

Mordraine refused and the group waited for a chance then broke free of their chains.  Dak started antagonizing the other teams to try and lure the guards away, but suddenly, the guards were grabbed by icky undead hands, as ghouls leaped out and attacked anyone they could get near enough to.

The group fended them off with shovels until Fakima noticed that the wagon that transported them was still there, along with their weapons!  She made her way over and retrieved the group's gear, while ghouls advanced on the group and the guards.  Once the group got a better handle on the ghouls, momentarily, Dak noticed a tunnel at the end of the path they were fighting on, as well as the mass of ghouls heading their way.

The group quickly used the tunnel to escape and ended up near the major fountain at the Circle of the Gods in Zoa.  Dak peeked out to make sure nobody was coming, but witnessed an exchange between a priest of the Church of Life and a well-dressed man and his two burly bodyguards.  The well-dressed man nodded to the two guards and they set upon the priest, killing him quickly.

The group made their way out of the tunnel, as Dak watched for any other people.  At once, more city guards set upon the group, catching them with the dead body and accusing them of the murder.

As Dak scouted for more watchful eyes, the group exited their escape tunnel and more city guards bore down on the group, catching them with the dead body.
